Portland RailsConf 2007 brain dump

Since getting in Portland I haven’t much time to sit down and think or really write, but here’s a quick brain dump, as I have like 4 blog entries queued up that I’m finishing…

  • portland is a great city
  • ive walked like 10 miles since Monday
  • portland is kind of like a bigger madison, with about 10x as many homeless people
  • the jupiter hotel is meh, but trendy (long story)
  • the actual conference is good – big – and o’reilly’ian (flashy)
  • the breakfast at railsconf sucks
  • everyone has macs, and women don’t like programming
  • avi loves smalltalk and ze is hilarious
  • grendel’s has great coffee

You should’ve made it down to our BoF about documentation last night…weren’t you the one who suggested a Rails app for the Rails docs?

“10x as many homeless people”???

I moved to Portland from San Francisco 3 years ago, and let me tell you, San Francisco has about 100x as many homeless people as Portland. Madison must have…well…none. Too cold I guess. ;-)

Is using a mac more feminine?

jeremy: yeah, sorry I missed it. I was meeting some old friends who live in the area.

theory: I think they are just more visible here then in Madison. I’m sure the bay area has a ton as well.

deb: not really - though macs definitely have a certain appeal to a lot of women I know. especially the ‘cuter’ macbooks/ibooks.

Our plans to move to Portland were scrapped for the very reason that it’s not different enough from Madison. Great city, though.

Lyle: heh, true its like Madison on steroids. I could see myself living there for a year or two — not sure if I’d ever make it home, though.
