So if WebWork uses DWR & Dojo, and Struts is becoming WebWork…

So, WebWork 2.2 was just released, which makes heavy use of DWR and Dojo javascript framework. Struts is going to be merging with WebWork as Struts Action Framework. So does that mean that in a couple years everyone running Struts 2.0 will be using (or at least be able to use) Dojo + DWR by default?

Thats a very nice market shared advantages for those two projects! Maybe we’ll see some Struts + Dojo vs Rails + Prototype smackdowns at conferences in a couple years after everything shakes out.

I hope so :-)

We hope to provide the same level of productivity as RoR with the added advantages in maintainability and the JVM that Java provides. Dojo itself is an awesome library, and very well designed and written. I’ve heard iffy things about the design of Prototype, but I don’t know firsthand.

I recently started using WebWork 2.2 very heavily. I’ve read through the Ruby on Rails book, but I must say, using Spring/Hibernate/WebWork/SiteMesh/XDoclet/OSCache, i’m achieving a VERY high level of productivity right now. I think Java frameworks are going to get to the point where they can rival Ruby on Rails.

It’s very hard to refactor in a dynamically typed language, and I guess that’s why i’ve started to dig in my heels a little bit after initially being very excited about RoR.

Well, all those Java frameworks are great, but the integration between them is not so good as Rails offers. Rails allows to see the first page in couple of minutes when for Java frameworks one has to spend hours and hours just to get started, to configure the application and make proper integration.

Fuad: I’m love Rails as much as the next hyper-enthusiast. Its just not quite there yet in the corporate space and deployment is still not quite there yet. Still, if you read my blog you know I’m a big fan.
